INTRODUCTIONResins are the most important ingredients of varnishes. Different types of resins are used in manufacture of varnishes. The demand for synthetic resins is quite high as that of natural resins. The scheme aim at the production of one of the most important resins namely Alkyd resin of all types-long, medium and short.
2. RAW MATERIALS
Linseed and other drying and semi drying oils, phthalic anhydride, pentaerythritol etc.
3. MANUFACTURING PROCESS
The oil is first heated at appropriate temperature with necessary quantity of polyhydric alcohol. The fatty acids in the oil are redistributed over alcohol. Esterification of this is done by adding the phthalic anhydride and continuing the cooking. Vacuum may be applied if required to increase the rate of reaction by efficiently moving the water. The resulting resin is cooled and discharged for packing.. Pale coloured alkyd resin is produced using carbon di oxide for making inert atmosphere.
